It showed that all accreditation agencies place a high premium on library provisions as a major component of requisite benchmarks in determining the status of the program or institutions being assessed. Academic libraries help to enrich formal classroom curricular and act as a broadening influence on lecturers and students as well as nurture in them the virtue of independent inquiry. State-of-the-art academic libraries confer prestige on the institutions and have tremendous impact on student retention, rankings, and high profiling of parent institution during accreditation. The article noted that there exists strong intrinsic and sometimes imperceptible relationship between academic libraries and higher education. It recommended institutionalization of global and regional ranking of academic libraries, among others.Item Information Access for Rural Women in Nigeria(IGI global (Handbook of Research on Rural Sociology and Community Mobilization for Sustainable Growth), 2019) Iwu-James, Juliana; Idiegbeyan-Ose, Jerome; Ifijeh, Goodluck; Segun-Adeniran, Chidi; Esse, Ugwunwa C.Adequate access and effective use of information is succinctly linked to sustainable development and empowerment of rural women. Analysis of the situation reveals that Nigerian rural women face marginalization as far as information access is concerned. This chapter identified some channels and preferred sources of information for the rural women with their inherent challenges. Some implications were also discussed ranging from exploitation and trafficking of women, inability to access and harness agriculture and health information, credit facilities and government programs. Some challenges of information provision to rural women as identified include lack of basic infrastructure, poverty, illiteracy, culture, and religion. The study recommended some strategies for improvement as regards quality access to information: establishment of vibrant public libraries in rural areas, continuous research on information seeking behaviour of rural women, information repackaging, provision of adult educational centres. The chapter concluded that neglect of rural women can only portend dangerItem Librarian without Building in an E-Learning Environment: Needed Skills, Challenges, and Solutions(IGI Global, 2014) Idiegbeyan-Ose, Jerome; Esse, Ugwunwa C.This chapter discusses e-learning, its advantages and challenges, the concept of a librarian without a building, and the characteristics and skills of a librarian without a building in an e-learning environment. The chapter empirically looks at the need for an e-librarian in an e-learning environment, the needed skills for such a librarian, and their challenges. Possible solutions to identify challenges are also discussed. The survey method was used for the study; the questionnaire was designed and administered to 138 librarians from Academic libraries in the six geo-political zones of Nigeria. 127 questionnaires were returned and used for analysis. The study reveals that there is a great need for e-librarians in e-learning environments, and that the librarians must possess such skills as high computer literacy, ability to learn fast, teach, and evaluate others. It was also discovered that e-librarians are faced with technical, administrative, financial, and capacity building challenges. Based on these, the authors recommend that e-librarians should be supported at all levels; they should be ready to develop themselves, strive at all cost to acquire more knowledge and skills in order to stand the changing nature of their job. It is also recommended that government agencies that accredit programmes at tertiary institutions should make sure that any institution that offers e-learning must also have a well organized e-library, and a well trained e-librarian must man the library. The study concludes that e-library and e-librarian without building must be recognized and empowered as part of the e-teaching and learning processesItem Library Consortia in Nigeria and the Place of ICT(Encyclopedia of Information Science and Technology (IGI Global), 2015) Idiegbeyan-Ose, Jerome; Esse, Ugwunwa C.; Adewole-Odeshi, EgbeLibrary Consortia implies the coming together of two or more libraries in a formal agreement to share their resources. The essence is that no library can boast of acquiring all the published literature in the world to render effective and efficient services for their users. Islam (2013) cited Manan (1998) and explained that libraries have been cooperating and collaborating on collection building for many years, he further stressed that the aim of library consortia is to maximize the availability of and access to information and service at a minimum cost, consortia enables the participating libraries to leverage shrinking budget, learn from each others, build better tools together and serve their users better by taking advantage of one another’s collection (Borek, 2006). Obaro (2013) opines that resources sharing or Library consortia is a vital practice in every library especially academic libraries, this is as a result of the fact that no library can boast of self sufficiency; also knowledge has continued to grow over the years due to the high rate at which researches are conducted and their findings published for the purpose of educating people. Knowledge is growing at a geometric progression. The need for access to information to support academic activities in institution is so high that a single library cannot afford it due to finance, manpower, and space. As a consequence of the perception of this situation, libraries started organizing networks and consortia with the aim of resource sharing. Collaborative efforts among and between libraries have been documented as far back as the late 19th century.Item Library Consortia in Nigeria and the Place of ICT(IGI Global (Encyclopedia of Information Science and Technology), 2015) Idiegbeyan-Ose, Jerome; Esse, Ugwunwa C.Library Consortia implies the coming together of two or more libraries in a formal agreement to share their resources. The study population consisted of seventy-eight librarians in four universities in the state. Questionnaires (which was the instrument for data collection) were administered to the entire population, out of which 55 (representing 70.5 % response rate) were filled, returned and analysed for the study. The study revealed that library professionals do make use of SNS. The most frequently visited SNS was Linkedln (58.2 %). The respondents also indicated that they visited SNS for the purpose of connecting and collaborating with friends and colleagues, carrying out current awareness and reference services to library users, etc. Majority of the respondents (94.5 %) in the study further revealed that the greatest challenge to the use of social network sites was lack of social media skills. The first hypothesis tested in the study indicated that there was moderate positive significant relationship between device used for internet access and use of social network sites (r=.408**, N= 55, p<.002.). The second hypothesis revealed that there was no significant relationship between gender and use of SNS (r = 0 .157, N=55, p >.05). The study was concluded with recommendations that library professionals should undergo training in social media skills.Item STRATEGIES FOR THE PRESERVATION OF ELECTRONIC RECORDS IN UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES IN NIGERIA(International Conference of Education, Research and Innovation, 2018-10) Ilo, Promise I.; Fagbohun, Michael; Idiegbeyan-Ose, Jerome; Esse, Ugwunwa C.; NWOKEOMA, Nwanne M.; Osinulu, Ifeakachuku; Olawoyin, Olajumoke R.; Adebayo, OyeronkePage 1. 5th of October, 2018 ICERI2018 Local Organising Committee ABSTRACT ACCEPTANCE LETTER This is a confirmation that the abstract entitled: “STRATEGIES FOR THE PRESERVATION OF ELECTRONIC RECORDS IN UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES IN NIGERIA” Author(s): Promise Ilo, Michael Fagbohun, Jerome Idiegbeyan-Ose, Ugwunwa Esse, Nwanne Nwokeoma, Ifeakachuku Osinulu, Olajumoke Olawoyin, Oyeronke Adebayo has been accepted as ORAL presentation at ICERI2018. This paper examines the use of social media tools for knowledge sharing by university library staff in Nigeria. A descriptive research design was adopted for this study. Simple random sampling technique was used to select one hundred and sixty five (165) responded from thirty nine (36) university libraries. A structured questionnaire was the major instrument of data collection and was administered at Nigeria Library Association Annual conference. The data was reported in descriptive statistics and Statistical Software Package for Social Science (SPSS) was used for data analysis. The study revealed that university library staff in Nigeria (𝑥= 3.28±SD= 1.223) always use Instant Messaging App and Social networking sites such as Whatsapp, WeChat, LinkedIn, Facebook, Google+, Fortuito, My space, Academia and Research Gate for knowledge sharing. To a great extent majority of library staff (𝑥= 3.07±SD= 0.989) used social media tools to share personal journals and conference proceedings with users and professional colleagues. Also the study revealed that the factors inhibiting library staff use of social media tools (𝑥= 3.63±SD= 0.484) in Nigeria is poor internet connectivity.
