Item Examination of the Nexus between Academic Libraries and Accreditation: Lessons from Nigeria.(Taylor & Francis, 2015-04) Nkiko, Christopher; Ilo, Promise I.; Idiegbeyan-Ose, JeromeThe article investigated the nexus between academic libraries and accreditation in the higher institutions with special focus on the Nigerian experience. It showed that all accreditation agencies place a high premium on library provisions as a major component of requisite benchmarks in determining the status of the program or institutions being assessed. Academic libraries help to enrich formal classroom curricular and act as a broadening influence on lecturers and students as well as nurture in them the virtue of independent inquiry. State-of-the-art academic libraries confer prestige on the institutions and have tremendous impact on student retention, rankings, and high profiling of parent institution during accreditation. The article noted that there exists strong intrinsic and sometimes imperceptible relationship between academic libraries and higher education. It recommended institutionalization of global and regional ranking of academic libraries, among others.Item Involvement of non-professionals in cataloguing: a survey of practices in three academic libraries in Nigeria(MJLIS, 2010-04) Yusuf, Felicia; Nkiko, ChristopherThe study examined the involvement of non-professionals in cataloguing practices in three academic libraries in Nigeria. Twenty five respondents comprising current cataloguers and those who had worked as cataloguers were used for the study. A descriptive survey method using a self-constructed questionnaire was used. Four research questions were posed and analysed using frequency counts and percentages. Results showed that the involvement of non-professionals in cataloguing is fast becoming a reality, with one university library depending more on non-professionals while the other two showed less dependence on them. Methods adopted by these libraries to ensure quality control include close supervision by professionals, training non-professionals in copy cataloguing, and designation of a librarian to constantly edit the catalogue for possible re-cataloguing. The use of prepared worksheets by librarians to be keyed in by non-professionals is the least used strategy. Other major findings include changes in cataloguing practices which comprise online cataloguing, cataloguing of Internet resources and electronic files, copy-cataloguing, different metadata structures, introduction of OPAC and the involvement of non-professionals in cataloguing practices. Outsourcing, procurement of ICT, employment of Systems Engineers as part of library staff, attendance of workshops and conferences among others were some of the strategies adopted to cope with these changes; however, the application of ICT was the most frequently used strategy. The study concluded that cataloguing practices in the libraries sampled have witnessed changes as a result of the application of ICT in organizing library materials which has in turn changed the role of cataloguers from merely providing bibliographic details of materials to that of supervision and other administrative functions, and in order to maintain relevance, librarians have been forced to build capacity in the area of ICT.Item LEADERSHIP AND INNOVATIVE BEHAVIOUR IN THE TWENTY FIRST CENTURY ACADEMIC LIBRARY(Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal), 2022-10-31) ESSE, UgwunwaThe paper considered leadership and innovation behaviours in the academic libraries of the 21st century. Based on an extensive review of literature it explored concepts in leadership behavior that can engender innovation in academic libraries. It was discovered that change is inevitable in environment due to the emergence of a pervasive application of information technology and communication to its operations. Thus, the 21st century library needs to integrate emerging technologies to its routine activities as well as expand the frontier of its services to gain competitive advantage over other information retrieval systems in order to ensure continuous relevance and sustainability. Noting that the extent to which libraries would deploy technologies and conform to global standards is determined by the quality of prevailing leadership competencies and skills. However, it was observed that the Nigerian academic libraries have not been able to find their footings in the scheme of effective leadership and innovation. It is therefore recommended that libraries; promote culture which supports new services, innovation and emerging technologies, put people at the centre by redefining services to provide easy experience for all library users among others.Item Library Services Platform Path to Cloud Computing Adoption in Nigerian Academic Libraries: A Review(Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal), 2017-10-19) Adegbilero-Iwari, Idowu; Hamzat, Saheed A.The library and Information science (LIS) profession have evolved over time taking advantage of prevailing technology. The arrival of computers and other communication technologies led to major changes in the ways library services are rendered and the profession practiced. Library Management Systems (LMS) is one of such earlier areas where ICT have been applied to the operations of the library during the library computerization era. The arrival of the renascent Cloud Computing is generating new areas of research in relation to librarians’ uptake of this new technology. Cloud computing is being leveraged by developers of library systems to facilitate the envisaged move away from ILS/LMS to a more robust system that can handle some of the shortcomings of the ILS/LMS. These new systems are called Library services platforms (LSP). While both established and new library systems vendors are turning out different products, libraries have begun to shift away to these new platforms. This paper reviews cloud computing in libraries and projects LSPs as the reliable path to its adoption in Nigerian academic libraries. Recommendations were made based on the outcomes of this study.Item Libray 2.0: Perception, Knowledge and Reception among Information Professionals at Covenant University Library.(IFE Centre for Psychological Studies (ICPS), 2013-09-01) Esse, Ugwunwa C.The research was done to examine the perception, knowledge and reception attitude of Information professionals at Covenant University Library. The nature of Lib 2.0 was briefly explained. The research paper also captured problem factors that hinder successful implementation of Library 2.0. The results show that a high level of awareness of Library 2.0 applications among information professionals. Blogs, RSS, IM and other Web 2.0 tools and services can assist Information professionals in their efforts to present information and better connect with their clients, especially the younger generations of Internet users. Though the librarians hold positive perceptions on library 2.0 applications, and indicated willingness to learn more on the utilization of 2.0 tools, they highlighted several impediments in implementing Library 2.0.Item Performance assessment model for academic libraries: the Covenant University Library example(NISCAIR, 2016-03-01) Iroaganachi, Mercy A.; Nkiko, ChristopherThe study explores performance assessment models in academic libraries and show-cases the practical experiences at the Covenant University Library. The paper which is based on an observational study of the researchers’ daily work experiences and review of literature identified constraints to performance assessment in academic libraries and has attempted to give solutions. The paper concludes that academic libraries should overcome constraints and imbibe the culture of performance assessment that involves a continuous and periodic process of fine-tuning critical management and functional processes, either reactively or proactively through deliberately designed parameters (indicators). It extrapolated from the unique experiences of the Centre for Learning Resources, Covenant University to construct a model (Lib-PERFQUAL) for libraries around the world. This is a model that comprises all indicators necessary to maintain continuous relevance and achieve utmost efficiency.Item Poverty Eradication: The Role of Nigerian Libraries towards the Achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)(Library Philosophy and Practice, 2020-05-01) Michael-Onuoha, Happiness Chijioke; Nkiko, Christopher; Okuonghae, OmorodionPoverty has been identified as the major source of widening global inequalities and underdevelopment at individual, organizational and national levels. The UN Sustainable Development Goals placed a great deal of priority in the eradication of all forms of poverty by the year 2030. The paper examined the roles of Nigerian libraries towards the achievement of this laudable goal. It canvasses the idea that poverty eradication is possible through the availability, accessibility and utilization of appropriate information resulting in requisite capacity building and empowerment of the Nigerian citizens. The paper identified specific interventions to be used by libraries in poverty alleviation to include: entrepreneurship empowerment, information literacy skills, information repackaging for the illiterate, lifelong learning initiatives, agricultural extension services, consultancy services, information dissemination services, provision of ICT skills education, improving reading culture and mobile library services. It concluded that libraries have the unlimited propensity to catalyse human capital development, productivity and reduction of poverty.Item Software Selection and Deployment for Library Cooperation and Resource Sharing Among Academic Libraries in South-West Nigeria(DESIDOC Journal of Library & Information Technology, 2015-01) Iroaganachi, Mercy A.; Iwu-James, Juliana; Esse, Ugwunwa C.This study assessed software selection and seployment sractices for library cooperation and resource sharing among aacademic libraries in South-West Nigeria. The purposive sampling technique was adopted and data collection instruments were questionnaire and interview. All of the 39 universities in the South- West zone were chosen and copies of questionnaire were administered to a representative of each academic library. 37 questionnaires were received. The descriptive statistical method of analysis was used. It was discovered that there is no form of cooperation and resource sharing among the academic libraries presently. The study recommends that National Universities Commission (NUC) should make automation a requirement for all academic libraries in Nigeria and recommend particular software(s) for cooperation and resource sharing to be possible among academic libraries among others
