    Design and Simulation of Ear and Tongue Based Biometrics for Attendance Management System

    Multimodal biometrics has engrossed a lot of interest in recent years as it offers a more dependable scheme for verification and authentication. Multimodal biometrics includes a combination of information from different biometric modalities. This research work simulates a novel method with a view of attendance management using ear and tongue images. Principal Component Analysis was employed for feature extraction of the biometric modalities and Self Organizing Feature Map was used for training and testing of the system. The method was evaluated using six thousand ear images and four thousand tongue images. The acquired images were preprocessed and features extracted were fused at this stage. The fusion results of ear and tongue images demonstrated better performance for attendance management.

    DEVELOPMENT OF A FACE MASK DETECTION SYSTEM USING SINGLE SHORT ALGORITHM: A CASE STUDY OF ELIZADE UNIVERSITY

    This paper discusses the development of a Face Mask Detection System using a Single Short algorithm for the prevention of the spread of COVID-19 in public places. Several works have been done in the detection of face masks; however, there is a need to increase the detection speeds while maintaining their high accuracy for large datasets. The developed system consists of both software and hardware components. The model of the system was developed with a Single Short algorithm with a total of Nine Hundred and Two (902) datasets with the faces of people with and without face masks, which were collected from Elizade University, Ilara-Mokin, Ondo State of Nigeria. The Single Short Detection MobileNetv2 Algorithm was used to develop a predictive model and deployed on the Raspberry Pi 4 microcontroller. Percentage accuracy, F1 score, Recall, and Precision were the performance evaluation metrics used for the work. Also, a questionnaire was distributed to fifty (50) participants, mostly students and staff of Elizade University, Ilara-Mokin, who tested the system with and without wearing a face mask. The result of the system's performance evaluation indicates an accuracy of 99.86%, an F1 score of 100%, a recall of 100%, and a precision of 100%. The developed system can be miniaturised and reproduced to make the entire system smaller and more affordable. With the availability of the system's prototype, the development of the system for access control in public places such as stadiums, shopping malls, and schools is possible.

    On the Bio-inspired Computational framework for exploring the production and management of sustainable energy

    In this paper, we proposed and designed a bio-inspired integrated cost-effective computational framework for generating and managing sustainable energy from biologically-related sources. The objective is to maximize the utilization of natural and biological sources of energy, for energy production among developing countries. First, we studied previously known sources of clean and sustainable energy. Second, we conducted a comparative study among these previously known energy sources. We conclude that these previously known energy sources are expensive and have the tendency to exhibit unimpressive performances in their distribution and management. In order to guarantee excellent performance and at a relatively cheaper rate, we proposed and designed a bio-inspired computational framework of integrated energy sources and bio-solar cells, to provide energy for local communities in developing countries. Third, we simulated an intelligent energy distribution management system for a typical residential unit within the proposed prototype of the bio-inspired computational framework. We provided justification that our framework has better potentials in terms of management, than existing energy sources.

    Studies of Energy Use, Green IT Practices and the Role of Entrepreneurship in Higher Engineering Education in Nigeria

    Africa is a home to diverse sources of natural energy (solar, geothermal, oil and gas, etc.). But it remains an established fact that the continent is still referred to as the Dark Continent due to little or not enough energy generation necessary for economic development and sustained growth. To address the concerns of global rising energy cost there has been global move to implement more efficient Information Technology (IT) resources; this is approached by using IT resources in an effective and economic way. Entrepreneurship and the use of green IT and promotion of awareness thereof through education are employed. Report has it that a reasonable amount of capital can be saved when businesses adopt efficient measures. In order to achieve this, development of a sustainable Green IT plans are required; such as energy conservation, green procurement, recycling, virtualization, governmental regulations, optimization of the IT infrastructures as well as proper awareness strategies are necessary. There is a need for inclusion of entrepreneurship in engineering curriculum and a review of green IT practices across different nations in the continent. This paper focuses on Nigeria and examines approaches to energy use, green IT practices and role of entrepreneurship in promoting innovation and creativity in higher engineering education and research. We investigate the various challenges posed by poor or inefficient IT practices, the role of entrepreneurship in engineering education and practice as well as explore sustainable strategic IT approaches to overcoming Greening Issues, which could have potential impact on economy. A survey of data from diversity of studies show that capitals saved through the various measures could facilitate the implementation of solutions to address some of the existing problems related to green IT issues for improved efficiency and sustainability. Inclusion of entrepreneurship in current engineering education curriculum would prepare the graduate engineers to be employable globally whilst contributing to the nation’s economic and sustainable development.

    Virtualization: A Sustainable Resource Management Strategy in Computing Practices

    Many computing practitioners are challenged with resource inefficiencies and insufficiencies emanating from poor management strategy. In order to reduce complexity and risk while improving productivity, practitioners need to virtualize their resources. Virtualization of devices allows fast installation of applications and reduces cost of procuring equipments and time spent on placing orders, delivery and set-up. The socio-political ramifications of global warming requiring good corporate citizens to meet greenhouse gas reduction targets, creates an added incentive for virtualization. This paper unleashes the many potentials of virtualization technology and explores how it promises to address much of the problems confronting computing practices. The results of the analysis of survey obtained from the industry-leading virtualization software company (VMware) ascertained virtualization as a solution for sufficiency and efficiency in computing practices as the main objectives of this paper.
